What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government program that provides dental and denture coverage to Canadians who do not have private dental insurance. It is administered through Sun Life Financial on behalf of the Government of Canada and is available to eligible individuals based on household income.

The CDCP covers a range of denture services including complete and partial dentures, relines and rebases, and certain repair procedures. Coverage percentages vary by income bracket, and our clinic handles the pre-authorization and direct billing process for you.

Who Is Eligible for the CDCP?

To be eligible you must:

  • Be a resident of Canada for tax purposes
  • Have filed your most recent tax return (and your spouse or common-law partner too, if you have one)
  • Have an adjusted family net income below $90,000
  • Not have access to private dental insurance

Since May 2025, eligible Canadians of any age can apply. Eligibility is determined by the Government of Canada, not by our clinic.

How Much Does the CDCP Cover?

Coverage is tiered by adjusted family net income:

  • Under $70,000: 100% of eligible costs covered
  • $70,000 to $79,999: 60% of eligible costs covered
  • $80,000 to $89,999: 40% of eligible costs covered
  • $90,000 or above: Not eligible

How to Apply for the CDCP

North Hill does not process applications. You apply directly with the Government of Canada, and once you are approved we handle the rest with Sun Life.

  1. Check that you qualify

    You need all four requirements listed above. To confirm you have no dental coverage through work or a pension, look at box 45 on your T4 or box 015 on your T4A: a "1" means no dental coverage through that job or pension.

  2. Have this information ready

    Your Social Insurance Number, full name, date of birth, home and mailing address, and any government dental program you are already on. If you have a spouse or common-law partner, they need to send their own application to be covered.

  3. Apply online or by phone

    Apply online through My Service Canada Account or the online application on canada.ca, or call Service Canada at 1-833-537-4342.

  4. Watch for your enrolment letter

    It shows your member ID, your coverage start date and your co-payment level. Sun Life then mails your member card. You do not need to wait for the card: bring your member ID to your appointment, booked on or after your start date.

Renew Your Coverage Every Year

CDCP coverage runs from July 1 to June 30, and members must renew each year after filing their taxes. If a renewal is missed, you can apply again, but care received during the gap is not covered and is not paid back later.   • Do I have to renew the CDCP every year?
