How They Work

How Implant Supported Dentures Work

Implant supported dentures attach to titanium implants surgically placed in the jawbone. Unlike conventional dentures that rest on the gum surface, implant dentures are anchored directly to the bone - which means they cannot slip, shift, or fall out during eating or speaking.

The implants integrate with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration, creating a permanent, stable foundation. Once healed, the denture clips or locks onto the implants. The result is full chewing function and complete confidence in social situations. If you have been struggling with loose conventional dentures, implant-supported options are worth discussing.

Two Main Types of Implant Dentures

  • Implant-retained (snap-on) dentures - clip onto 2 to 4 implants, removable for cleaning. The most common and affordable implant option. Dramatically more stable than conventional dentures.
  • Implant-supported (fixed) dentures - permanently fixed to 4 to 6 implants. Screw-retained and removed only by the clinician. The closest experience to natural teeth available today.

Steve evaluates your bone density, overall health, and goals to recommend which type is right for you. A referral to an oral surgeon or implant dentist is coordinated as needed - you don't need to find one yourself.

Who Is a Candidate?

Most healthy adults who have lost teeth are candidates for implant dentures. Steve assesses:

  • Adequate bone volume in the jaw (bone grafting can resolve low bone density in many cases)
  • Non-smoker or willing to quit around the surgical period
  • No uncontrolled diabetes or immune conditions
  • Realistic expectations and commitment to follow-up care

Even patients who have worn conventional dentures for years are often candidates. Bone loss from long-term denture wear can frequently be addressed with bone grafting.

Why Patients Choose Implant Dentures

  • Zero slipping - anchored to bone, not gum tissue
  • Eat any food, including hard and chewy items
  • No adhesive pastes or powders required
  • Preserves jawbone and prevents facial collapse
  • Natural appearance - nearly indistinguishable from teeth
  • Can last a lifetime with proper care

The Process

Your Implant Denture Journey, Step by Step

Implant dentures involve a coordinated process between the denturist and an oral surgeon. Here is what to expect from start to finish in Calgary.

  1. Free Consultation at North Hill

Steve evaluates your situation, discusses your goals, and gives you an honest assessment of your candidacy, options, and total cost. No fees, no pressure, no referral required.

  2. Surgical Consultation & Implant Placement

Steve coordinates a referral to an oral surgeon or implant dentist for the surgical phase. Titanium implants are placed into the jawbone under local anesthesia. You do not need to find a surgeon yourself.

  3. Healing Period (Osseointegration)

The implants fuse to the jawbone over 3 to 6 months. During this time you may wear a temporary denture. This healing phase is critical to long-term success and cannot be rushed.

  4. Impressions & Denture Fabrication

Once the implants are confirmed integrated, Steve takes impressions and fabricates your new denture in our on-site lab. Attachment components are custom-fitted to your specific implant configuration.

  5. Fitting & Delivery

Your implant denture is placed and attachment mechanisms are verified. Same-day adjustments are made as needed. You leave with a fully functional, stable prosthetic and complete care instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Calgary patients considering implant supported dentures.

  • How much do implant supported dentures cost in Calgary?

Implant denture costs vary depending on the number of implants, the type of denture (snap-on vs. fixed), and whether bone grafting is needed. Steve will provide a complete, itemized quote at your free consultation covering both the prosthetic and surgical phases. Many insurance plans cover a portion of the prosthetic work, and we direct-bill to most providers.

  • Is the implant surgery painful?

The surgery is performed under local anesthesia and most patients report less discomfort than expected. Post-surgical soreness typically resolves within a few days. The oral surgeon Steve refers you to will discuss sedation options if you have concerns about the procedure.

  • Can I get implant dentures if I have been wearing regular dentures for years?

In many cases, yes. Long-term conventional denture wearers often experience bone loss, which may require bone grafting before implants can be placed. This is assessed during the consultation phase. Bone grafting is a routine procedure performed by the oral surgeon and does not disqualify most patients.

  • How long do implant dentures last?

The titanium implants themselves can last a lifetime with proper care. The denture prosthetic typically lasts 10 to 15 years before needing to be replaced or refurbished, depending on wear and maintenance.

  • Can I eat normally with implant dentures?

Yes. Restored chewing function is one of the most significant benefits. Most patients can eat virtually any food, including hard, crunchy, and chewy items that were off-limits with conventional dentures.

  • Do implant dentures preserve the jawbone?

Yes - this is one of the key advantages over conventional dentures. Conventional dentures sit on top of the gum and do not prevent bone resorption. Implants stimulate the jawbone the same way natural tooth roots do, significantly slowing bone loss and preserving facial structure over time. Learn more on our tooth loss and health page.
